Monte Cristo Sandwich

Monte Cristo Sandwich

Christmas is a few days away which means ham is likely to be on your menu. Whether it’s a dinner for one or four, ham is a Christmas dish favorite. One of my favorite things about ham is the dishes you can make with the leftovers. From soups to sandwiches the options are endless. One of my favorite sandwiches is a classic Monte Cristo stacked with fresh slices of ham and turkey too! This sweet and savory sandwich is guaranteed to be a meal anyone in your home will love.

Monte Cristo Sandwich

If you’ve never had a Monte Cristo Sandwich before it tastes like french toast meets a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. It’s the perfect mix of sweet and savory in a meal. The first time I had a Monte Cristo Sandwich was years ago at a random restaurant. The description sounded delicious and I’m still happy to this day I tried it. Now that I know my way around the kitchen I knew I had to give this recipe a shot. I added my own seasonings to give it a little twist. However, I believe these simple adds will make a big difference in the taste.

Monte Cristo Sandwich Tips:

  • I love cheddar cheese for this dish but use whatever cheese is your favorite. As a cheese lover there are few sliced cheeses that wouldn’t still taste delicious in this sandwich.
  • Don’t soak the bread in the egg and milk mixture. It will cause the middle of the sandwich to be soggy and you don’t want that.
  • Cut the edges of the bread off AFTER it has been put together and smashed down. Trust me it is much easier.
  • Use a sharp knife for a clean cut on your edges. This helps seal the edges even more.
  • Use a heavy object to “crush” the sandwich. I used a cast iron skillet to sit on top of my crushed sandwich.

  • 2 Tbsp. Powdered Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. Black Pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. Sea Salt

Instructions

  1. Lay two of your three slices of bread on a cutting board or plate.

  2. Top both slices with one slice of cheddar cheese and three slices of ham and turkey.

  3. On one of the slices topped with cheese and ham or turkey use a third piece of bread to place on top of the meat. Now place your last slice of bread topped with ingredients to create a stack like the picture here.

  4. Use a piece of plastic wrap (or foil) to wrap your sandwich. Use a heavy pan or board to press down on the sandwich until it is compact and well combined. *The harder you press the better the sandwich will stick together for the egg mixture*

  5. Unwrap the sandwich and use a sharp knife to cut the edges off the sandwich. Set to the side.

  6. In a bowl whisk the milk, eggs, black pepper, sea salt, and onion powder together well.

  7. Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt about 1/2 tbsp. of butter in the pan to start.

  8. Dip the sandwich in the egg and milk mixture on both sides of the sandwich. Don't make it too soggy.

  9. Place the sandwich in the pan and let it sear until golden brown on both sides (for about 2-4 minutes per side)

  10. If you would like to seal the edges and add a little more crisp sear the sandwich on all four edges for about 30 seconds to 1 minute per edge.

  11. Gently cut the sandwich in half, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and enjoy!
