D.I.Y. Cocoa Honey Face Mask

cocoa honey face mask

Last weekend I dedicated a few hours of self-care to myself. I took a nice long bath, washed my hair, did a face mask, and drank a glass of wine. It was heavenly…while it lasted. About an hour and a half into my self-care session my oldest daughter, Jordyn, invited herself into the bathroom to ask me fifty questions. Oh, and to remind me that I’m a Mom of two small children, which means time to myself is limited. Ha! One of her questions was “can I put that stuff on my face too?” Although I didn’t share that particular face mask with her for skin sensitivity reasons, I told her I would make her one next weekend. This story and idea is how our kid friendly, D.I.Y. cocoa honey face mask, was created.

It has only been in the last few years that I have tried to get better about self-care. I had a great routine going prior to my second pregnancy. My pregnancy with Riley was full of aches, pains, and nausea. These pregnancy symptoms meant my self-care routine took a back seat for a while. Now that Riley is old enough to spend time with Dad, and eat foods other than breast milk, I’m able to get back to my self-care routines.

We made our masks using ingredients most of us have right in our kitchen. There are so many natural skin moisturizing, smoothing, and exfoliating benefits to bananas, buttermilk, 100% cocoa powder, and honey. So we made a face mask using all of these ingredients. We’ve been glowing ever since if I do say so myself.

Outside of this do-it-yourself face mask being a great bonding experience with my daughter, the larger idea is for her to understand the importance of self-care. We live in a society of people who operate by burning themselves out. I want to teach my girls the opposite. I want them to understand at an early age that there’s nothing selfish about taking care of yourself. One of my favorite sayings is “you can’t pour from an empty cup”. It’s up to ourselves to be sure our cups are staying full for us to successfully share with others. With that said, let’s get this face mask whipped up so you can get to your self-care ASAP!

D.I.Y. Cocoa Honey Face Mask:

  • 1 large Banana
  • 2 tsp 100% Cocoa Powder
  • 1 Tbsp. Buttermilk
  • 1 Tbsp. Honey
  1. Using a fork mash your banana up very well until there are no chunks left.
  2. Add your honey, cocoa powder, and buttermilk to the mashed banana. Stir until well combined.
  3. Adjust any ingredients you would like then generously spread on your face.
  4. Let the mask sit for 10 minutes and wipe off with a soft warm washcloth.

*You can save any remaining cocoa honey face mask in the fridge for up to 3 days.*

Here’s to a lot of mommy daughter home spa days. Jordyn also asked me while wearing her face mask if she could have a glass of wine “like Mommy did with her mask”. I had to explain to her she’s 17 years away from being able to have some wine LOL. However, we can pour some glasses of sparkling cider next time. 😉
