If you’ve been to Louisiana then you know of the staple dishes they take seriously down here is their red beans and rice. Any authentic Cajun restaurant is guaranteed to have red beans and rice on the menu. Being a foodie means I’m always trying my best to recreate the authentic flavors in some of my favorite dishes. After having red beans and rice at one of my favorite local mom and pop restaurants in Bossier City, LA, I left determined to create a Crockpot Smoked Red Beans and rice dish that is equally delicious. Not only did I figure it out after two tries, being able to throw the ingredients in the crockpot and go is perfection.

My only not so great news is that you have to prepare your rice separately the old fashioned way. Unless you’re one of those fancy people with a rice cooker. I haven’t hit that level of fancy just yet. Ha! Making rice is as easy as breathing to me because growing up Caribbean means rice all the time. There are many reason I love this Crockpot Smoked Red Beans meal besides the convenience of using the crockpot. Especially during comfort food and soup season. I love the ease of the recipe, and that it can be used for a freezer meal as well. Freezing meals is perfect for those of you who like to batch cook and freeze meals for the week. I could go on and on about this recipe so instead of talking about it more, let’s go ahead and get into this yummy recipe!

Crockpot Smoked Red Beans
Authentic Cajun red beans and rice recipe. Perfect comfort food any time of the year!
Ingredients
- 1 lbs. Red Kidney Beans dried
- 2 lbs. Smoked Turkey Wings
- 1 Tbsp. Olive Oil
- 6-8 cups Water or Chicken Stock
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 Sweet or Yellow Onion (medium) diced
- 2 tsp Tony's Creole Seasoning
- 1 Tbsp Slap Ya Mama
- 1 tsp Onion Powder
- 2 Bay Leaves
- Black Pepper to taste
Instructions
-
Heat the olive oil over medium high heat. Once hot cook the minced garlic and diced onion for a minute or two.
-
Add the Tony's Creole Seasoning and onion powder to the garlic and onions, stir well, and cook for another 2-3 minutes or until fragrant.
-
Turn your crockpot on high. (You can slow cook on high for 5-6 hours or on low for 8-9 hours)
-
Add your smoked turkey wings to the pot first. Then add the garlic and onion mixture on top of the turkey wings.
-
Gently empty the dried red kidney beans to the crockpot.
-
Pour your cups of water and/or chicken broth over the contents already in the pot. (I like to use a mix of half water half chicken broth. Either of them works!)
-
Add the Slap Ya Mama seasoning and bay leaves. Stir everything together to evenly distribute the seasoning in the food mixture.
-
Cover the crockpot and let it cook.
-
Half way through the cook time take the smoked turkey off of the bones, stir the ingredients together well, and cover again.
-
Adjust your spicy level by adding black pepper, hot sauce, and/or more Tony's or Slap Ya Mama to the beans. Enjoy!

I’ve made this twice now (once on/around Juneteenth and again this weekend) and it is absolutely delicious! It reminds me of the red beans my late mother used to make and fills my heart with so much joy to be able to have this meal. Thank you for sharing!

I plan to make this but can you tell me where to get the slap ya momma seasoning from?
Hi Joyce! I live in Louisiana so Iām able to find it at any regular grocery store. Depending on where you are you may have to order it online (however I know quite a few grocery stores carry it regionally)
Hi I will be trying out this recipe but wanted to ask first should I soak the beans before cooking?
Hi Erika! You do NOT have to soak the beans before cooking. I just rinse them before dumping them in the pot š
