When I read how easy it is to make a simple syrup this blood orange simple syrup immediately popped up in my mind. For those of you who have never tried a blood orange, imagine a cross between a regular orange and sweet grape. It has such a sweet and warm taste to it. And did I mention how beautiful they are to look at or photograph? The word blood in the name may be off putting to some but trust me when I say they’re a beautiful Burgundy red color. However, blood oranges aren’t always the easiest to find. I finally tracked down a bag of blood oranges at my local Whole Foods.
For those of you wondering, the bottle in my photos is the recipe below, doubled. I also bought the bottle itself on clearance at Target a few years ago. I’m positive you can find more in their home goods/kitchen section.

Ingredients
- 1 cup White Sugar
- 1 cup Water

Instructions

Wash the skin of the blood orange(s) well since it will be used for boiling. Then cut the blood orange(s) into 8 pieces. Both halves in quarters.

In a sauce pot, over medium heat add the blood orange(s), water and white sugar. Bring to a slight boil.
-
Lightly stir until all of the sugar has dissolved. I recommend stirring over heat for an additional 3-5 minutes longer for a stronger blood orange flavor.
-
Turn off the burner and set the pot to the side for about 20 minutes to cool down.
-
Once cool, pour the blood orange simple syrup into a glass bottle or container and let it completely cool before placing in the fridge for at least an hour.
