“Stand By Me”

May 1, 2015 Comments : 4

Ironically, I had this blog post scheduled to post on Sunday. But I woke up this morning, and read Ben E. King passed away yesterday, and felt it was only right to post it today instead. A beautiful song to remember a beautiful man.

R.I.P. Ben E. King.

We’ve all seen the classic movie “Stand By Me,” but nothing quite compares to the song by Ben E. King. This is such a simple and beautiful song. All of these years later, and you can still find people from all generations and backgrounds who can sing this song to you word for word. If that isn’t the definition of timeless music and a great song, I don’t know what is. Enjoy this beautiful song and share it with someone you would love to have stand by you for the rest of time. I promise they will more than appreciate your loving gesture.

Have a beautiful first day of May!

“Always You”

April 26, 2015 Leave a Comment

I first heard this song on the season finale of the show “Parenthood” when Sarah was walking down the aisle of her wedding. I fell in love with how beautiful this song is, and was upset at the same time that I hadn’t heard it before then. Although I may have been late to the discovering Ingrid Michaelson party, this is a classic better late than never story, because I love her music. As if “Parenthood” wasn’t an amazing show all on its own, it had to one up itself, and introduce me to awesome musical artists too. Well played “Parenthood” and I miss you 🙁

My Top 10 Favorite TV Couples

April 22, 2015 Leave a Comment

I watch a lot of TV shows, but there are only a handful over the years where I can say I truly love the onscreen couple. You know what I mean, the couples who in your mind, are real couples and not just make believe for TV. I love all 10 of these couples and refuse to acknowledge they’re married to other people in real life. These are my top 10 TV show couples who in one way or another I like to think about them being a little bit of my husband and I. Who are your favorite TV couples? Share in the comment section below :-).

#10: Phillip and Vivian Banks (the 1st one)

Fresh Prince

“The Fresh Prince of Bel Air“

There was just a certain sass and realistic vibe between Aunt Viv and Uncle Phil many married women can relate to. Uncle Phil was this big, powerful, lawyer who could scare the crap out of his children, and nephew. Then there was Aunt Viv, who for the most part didn’t have to say or do much to prove she was just as powerful in their home. But when she did, especially towards Uncle Phil, she did NOT play that! Remember when Uncle Phil faked a back injury to get out of going to the lamaze class with Aunt Viv? Now, remember how much he regretted that pooor decision once Aunt Viv went off on him? Exactly. How could I not love their dynamic? Oh, and just to be clear, I only felt this awesomeness when it was the original Aunt Viv. I wasn’t the biggest fan of replacement Aunt Viv.

#9: Marshall and Lily Eriksen

How I Met Your Mother

“How I Met Your Mother“

I joined the HIMYM bandwagon a few months before the final season aired. It took my husband and I less than three weeks to watch all eight seasons on Netflix before season nine aired. The one thing I couldn’t deny about the show was how much I loved the clichĂ© mushiness of Marshmellow and Lilypad. Yes, I did just address them by their nicknames. Marshall happens to be my favorite character on the show, because you can’t fake the hilariousness he brings to his character. Plus, as a married woman, who couldn’t love a man who wants to do nothing but love his wife, save the environment, be an awesome friend, and be passionate about great tasting food? Although I don’t love Lily individually as much as I love Marshall, there is no Marshmellow without Lilypad 🙂

#8: Michael and Jay Kyle

My Wife and Kids

“My Wife and Kids“

In my personal opinion, this television show was VERY underrated for how hilarious, likeable, and relatable it was to real life. What is even more underrated was the relationship between Michael and Jay. There are so many episodes I watch of this show and it could be Kris and I giving the exact same dialogue or argument. I love how flirt-y they made their characters. Michael was always making metaphorical flirt-y comments to Jay, without the kids catching on to what he was implying, or talking about. Now that I am married, I completely understand how important the playful flirting is in a marriage. I love Michael and Jay’s characters for being a very positive and realistic married couple.

#7: Corey and Topenga Matthews

Boy Meets World

“Boy Meets World“

I am a big fan of Corey and Topenga for many reasons. A few of those reasons being; this was one of my favorite shows growing up, they met when they were children and it reminds me of my husband and I, and lastly they were a really good example of how messy, crazy, and awesome young love can be. Despite how young they were there was just something so admirable about Corey and Topenga’s innocent love. Even when one of them made a mistake, it was so innocent you couldn’t help but want them to work it all out. Remember when Corey kissed that girl kissed Corey and him and Topenga were separated for a little while? Then she met a guy who kissed her as well? I’m pretty sure every single one of us were holding out hope of them getting back together even when it seemed like it wouldn’t because…they’re Corey and Topenga, damn it! Of course they worked it out and proved once more why we love them.

#6: Nathan and Haley Scott

One Tree Hill

“One Tree Hill“

I used to make fun of my best friend for watching this show in high school. A few years later I would be eating my words because this is one of my favorite television shows EVER. I got so attached to the show I found myself legitimately disliking characters to the point of hating them if I saw them in other television or movie roles. Yes, it was that serious. As much as I was team Lucas and Peyton from the beginning, there is nothing that compares to Nathan and Haley a.k.a. Naley. I think the biggest appeal of their relationship was how much they had to grow, change, and support one another in the toughest situations. Unlike many of my other couples on here, there wasn’t very much “realistic-ness” of this entire show. I’m pretty sure the only person who had an actual parents was Lucas. However, the rest of these high school kids were living in huge parent-less homes, emancipating themselves from their rich parents, becoming superstars, then getting married and pregnant all while in high school, and living as one big happy family. Despite how insane it sounds, Nathan and Haley’s love was something special. If you can watch this show and not get the feels when Nathan and Haley get back together after her superstar stunt then you clearly have no heart! Just kidding…sort of.

#5: Martin and Gina Payne

Martin

“Martin“

How could Martin and Gina NOT be on this list? I wish I could explain how much I completely relate to Martin’s non-stop goofiness, and Gina wanting to kill him at least half the time. It’s the story of my life being married to Mr. Jamieson. No, seriously. He is a huge comedian, goofball, and crazy person wrapped up in one person, and because of this I’m usually the one who has to balance us out to bring us back to Earth…but it works. Just as Martin and Gina’s relationship worked. Remember the episode of the first night they returned home from their honeymoon and Martin went to the pool hall with his friends, and Gina presented him with a beeper? (I know talk about throw back) He lost all of his money and clothes to a pool shark, who happened to be a woman, and instead of telling Gina the truth, he told her he ran into a burning building to save orphans? Exactly…LOL. They were a great example of how much couples are guaranteed to drive one another borderline CRAZY, but it’s all worth it in the end.

#4: Crosby and Jasmine Braverman

Parenthood3

“Parenthood“

There are very specific characteristics of both Crosby and Jasmine that are extremely similar to my husband and I. There are too many to name, but I will say it is what makes watching them so much fun. If you have ever watched the show Parenthood, they are also the only couple who don’t make me dislike them for being extremely stupid ridiculous. Crosby is the classic boy who doesn’t completely grow up until he meets a woman to make him do so. He is a great combination of caring, confused, and completely in love with, Jasmine. Jasmine, is your awesome woman with undeniable talent and the most stable mother for their son. I also appreciate the fact that she is so kind, but will put someone in their place as “nicely” as possible :-).

#3: Eric and Tami Taylor

Eric & Tammy Taylor

“Friday Night Lights“

If you haven’t watched the show FNL, I suggest you stop what you’re doing, turn on your TV, go to Netflix, type in “Friday Night Lights” and press play. Once you’ve started I don’t have to tell you not to move, because you’ll be too hooked to the show to move anyway. Once you’ve started watching, you will immediately understand why I love Eric and Tami Taylor. They are PERFECT. When I say perfect, I mean they are what marriage is ACTUALLY like. You can see the many moments where Coach Taylor is worn out and doesn’t want to be the man of his house and sometimes many other houses, but he sucks it up and deals with it. Then you have housewife gone workforce, Tami, who has to pick and choose the difference between support and sacrifice. They argue and always come back around to how much they love one another in the end. But seriously, just watch the show, and love them as much as I do.

#2: Heathcliff and Clair Huxtable

clairehuxtable

“The Cosby Show“

Does this TV couple really need an explanation as to why they’re one of the best television couples of all time, especially in Black households. Two extremely succesful people who were even more realistic as parents. If you don’t believe me, and you’re one of the few people who lives underneath a rock and haven’t seen this show, you should watch any episode of Vanessa getting in trouble. (I don’t know what it was about their second youngest daughter, but she got in enough trouble for all 5 of kids combined.) Clair Huxtable is my spirit animal. She is the epitome of who I want to be when I grow up. She’s an awesome wife, mother, and lawyer. Cliff is who all wives want their husbands to be. A man who thinks he’s right, but knows the saying “happy wife, happy life” is the only way to live 😉

#1: Dwayne and Whitley Wayne

Dwayne & Whitley

“A Different World“

If you know me, you know I am obsessed with the show ADW, and even more obsessed with Dwayne and Whitley. This is a show I feel EVERYONE should watch to learn more about themselves and others. The progression of Dwayne and Whitley’s relationship over 6 seasons was nothing less than perfect. They are two extremely different people from very different backgrounds, and they completely balance each other out. They were beyond believable with their chemistry and I’m still holding out hope to this day that they get married in real life haha. Whitley is such a handful and can be quite crazy at times most of the time, but a very intelligent woman. And Dwayne is probably the only person who can bring her back down to Earth when need be. More than anything, as a woman, one of my favorite parts of their relationship is the way Dwayne adores, Whitley. I am a typical romantic who gushes for men who adore their wives. The sentimental side of Dwayne Wayne is what makes him the greatest TV husband, ever, in my book. 🙂

Jordyn is 10 Months Old!

April 18, 2015 Leave a Comment

Little Miss Jordyn is only two months away from turning 1 year old…and I tear up every time I think about it. My Mom and I have been planning her 1st birthday party for the last month and a half, and I’m getting so excited for the day to get here! I’m amazed at how much she has learned and grown in the last month. She took five steps using her little walker toy the other night and I about jumped out of my skin with excitement haha. She can prop herself up on her knees and rock back and forth/dance her little heart out, but she refuses to actually crawl. I’m starting to think she takes pleasure in watching me run around the room looking for items to place in front of her to encourage her to crawl. At this rate, it’s looking like she may skip crawling and go straight to walking. Once she is either crawling, walking, or doing both, we are going to have our work cut out for us, because she is a busy body!

IMG_2853

She’s officially at the stage where she can eat pretty much what we eat for dinner just blended up. She has her picky moments when she doesn’t want much to eat, but 95% of the time she eats with NO problem. We all ran into our first stomach bug last week/weekend. Jordyn caught the stomach bug on Wednesday evening and by Saturday, Kris and I both had it with her. It was a rough few days, but we all made it through. Thank God it was milder stomach bug and not a more serious one. I hated seeing my baby girl so miserable and tired. These days she’s doing a lot of shaking her head “no” and/or trying to make herself dizzy. I can thank her wonderful Dad for teaching her this little trick. Speaking of her Dad, she’s still “Da-da-da-da-da”-ing it up almost all day. She used to laugh when I would tell her “say MA-MA,” but now she doesn’t even react anymore. She just stares at me like I am the most boring person in the world, and she wishes I would leave her alone already. I know, she’s sweet like that.

IMG_2842

The older she gets, the closer her and big brother Ares are becoming. If he could love on her all day long he would. It’s adorable to watch, but annoying to have to wipe his kisses off of her constantly lol. I’m happy he’s so protective of her and I’m happy she loves him just as much. I have a feeling Jordyn will be walking this month, and something tells me the two of them will be getting into a lot of trouble together ;-).

We’ll see you guys in a month for another update!

“Good Morning, Heartache”

April 15, 2015 Leave a Comment

I don’t know if I have mentioned it before, but I have realized how much I appreciate and love jazz music within the last few years. One of my absolute favorite artists of the jazz genre is Billie Holiday a.k.a. Lady Day, herself. She had such a smooth and sultry singing voice, and I only wish I could have been around to see her perform live. Not to mention she was absolutely beautiful. It’s amazing how someone with such a rough past was able to bring such beauty to others using her voice. There is an awesome, and historically known, jazz lounge in Chicago one of my roommates and I discovered in college called, the Green Mill. Many well-known jazz artists have performed at this lounge, and as I’m sure you have guessed, Lady Day was definitely one of them. As if this lounge couldn’t be more amazing, I found out Billie had performed there on multiple occasions and it’s been my favorite ever since. 🙂

Billie Holiday would have turned 100 years old, last week, on April 7th, and social media celebrated her with the hash-tag #BillieAt100. I added this particular song as my contribution to the hashtag remembering such an amazing songstress. This is my favorite Billie Holiday song and would like to share it with those of you who may have never heard it before, or would like to take another listen.

Happy Wednesday!

Quinoa Burrito Bowl Salad

April 12, 2015 Leave a Comment

One of my favorite quick food stops, that fits into my “cleaner” eating, calorie counting lifestyle, is the shredded chicken salad from Cafe Rio. If you have never been to Cafe Rio, their handmade tortillas are AMAZING. I am willing to eat only lettuce and dry chicken if it means I can eat that tortilla. Which is 420 calories on it’s own…yikes!

Well, I came home from the gym one night and wanted a Cafe Rio chicken salad REALLY badly, but did not want to drive 15 minutes into town to get it. (Give me a break, HIIT workouts are draining) I decided to make my own healthier version of the salad using whatever I had at home. When I order the salad at Cafe Rio it consists of; one flour tortilla, one scoop black beans, lettuce, cilantro, light tortilla chips, one teaspoon cotija cheese, and half a serving of cilantro lime vinaigrette. Luckily for me, I had a majority of these ingredients, or something similar, available in my refrigerator or pantry. So, I got creative and made my own chicken salad bowl. This is the recipe I created, feel free to change and/or add more of your favorite veggies. You will need the following ingredients:

1 tsp olive oil

1 Fajita sized flour tortilla (140 calories) or 2 corn taco sized tortillas (40 calories each)

1 small shredded chicken breast (3-4 oz.)

1-2 Tbsp sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup quinoa (1/4 cup uncooked)

1/4 cup canned black beans (drained and rinsed)

1 cup romaine lettuce

1 cup spinach

1 Tbsp chopped red onion

1/4 cup canned corn

cilantro (as much as you would like)

IMG_2386

Heat the olive oil over medium high heat and brown tortilla on both sides until a very light brown color. Once tortilla has been browned, place it in a bowl and push down until the tortilla lines the inside of the bowl. Take washed lettuce and spinach, place in bowl (on top of tortilla). Add shredded chicken, quinoa, black beans, and corn (you can combine these ingredients together in a separate bowl before adding to salad if you would prefer). Then top the entire salad with the chopped red onion, cilantro, and cheddar cheese. Now it’s TIME TO EAT!

IMG_2388

* I had half a serving of cilantro lime vinaigrette dressing leftover in my fridge from a Cafe Rio visit earlier in the week, and used the remainder for this salad. However, for future use, you (as well as myself) can find homemade dressing recipes online. I usually use Pinterest when looking for yummy recipes such as dressings. Or you can just make up your own healthier dressing using some olive oil, lemon or lime, and salt and/or pepper.

5 Ways To Bring “Spring” To Your Home

April 8, 2015 Comments : 2

Happy Tuesday everyone! As of yesterday, it is officially Spring time, and I wanted to bring some spring spirit to all of you. Here in Montana we’ve definitely been appreciating the Spring like temperatures after a long Winter of non-stop snow. Even though it’s supposed to snow again next week, it doesn’t seem so bad when you know the end of Winter of near. Spring forward always helps my mood too because it’s nice to still see the sun setting after 7pm.Read More

Happy Easter/Resurrection Sunday!

April 5, 2015 Comments : 2

This is Jordyn’s first Easter/Resurrection and we are going to a new church with Jordyn’s BFF Amelia and her Mom and Dad. There is something special about being able to worship His name and everything He does for us with your friends. Growing up, after going to church on Easter/Resurrection Sunday, we always had a big dinner and hung out with the family for hours on end. Now that I live so far away from home, I plan to keep the tradition going, and have our first “framily” Easter/Resurrection dinner at our home here in Montana.

But above all else on this day, I pray you and your families enjoy celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Take the time to reflect upon the ultimate sacrifice HE made for OUR sins. Remember without Him there is no us, and there will never be anyone who walks this Earth that loves us more than Jesus did, does, and always will.

easter2015

“After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” (NIV) Matthew 28:1-10

DIY Easter Basket

April 1, 2015 Leave a Comment

Happy April Fool Day to all of you pranksters out there! Try not to ruin lives with your pranks, today ;-).

Since it is April 1st, this means Easter is this upcoming, Sunday. This will be Jordyn’s first Easter. Years before I found out I was pregnant, I told myself I would make my future children’s Easter baskets myself. I love doing little DIY (do it yourself) crafts when it comes to the holidays, and I think personalized Easter baskets are the best since you can mold the theme to characteristics and personality.

The theme for Jordyn’s Easter basket this year is pretty simple: Baby. She’s at the baby stage of learning to feed herself snacks, pick things up, hold things, and like the various textures of things. So I went to a few different stores to buy items she needs, likes, and can use in the future.

IMG_2608

The basket contains: A bunny Bible, a set of egg-shaped outside chalk, a stuffed animal (bunny), large plastic Easter eggs, snacks to put in the Easter eggs, and a snack cup for her treats.

I first filled the plastic Easter eggs with the little Gerber’s Graduate snacks. Jordyn loves the Strawberry Apple ones!

IMG_2611

Then I placed the green and pink plastic grass in the bottom of the basket since it matched the basket colors.

IMG_2613

Now, put the basket stuffers in the Easter basket so it fits well, but looks full as well. I played around with a few ways to place the items in the basket before I finally picked my favorite design.

IMG_2623

And this is the finished product! Although Jordyn doesn’t have much of an opinion this time around, I know she’ll enjoy the items over the next year, and will enjoy her baskets even more as she grows up. Yay for her first Easter basket! Have a happy Wednesday. 🙂

Happy 19th Birthday, Taylor!

March 30, 2015 Leave a Comment

My sister, Taylor, turns 19 years old, today. Sometimes I still can’t believe she’s old enough to walk and talk on her own, let alone old enough to be in college. There is something extremely special about being a big sister. You get to watch your younger siblings grow from little helpless babies to strong independent adults. Tay is currently in her freshman year of college, working part-time, and finding time to spoil her niece in between :-). This won’t be a long blog post, but I just wanted to be sure to wish you a very happy and blessed 19th birthday. I hope you get spoiled rotten, today, and don’t take for granted being able to see another year. Jordyn and I look forward to seeing and spending time with you in June. We love you SO much! Happy birthday again! <3
