Go See "Get Out" ASAP!

I took myself on a day date to see the highly praised movie, Get Out, yesterday afternoon. It was everything I needed it to be and more. There is no better way to sum the movie up than to say, Jordan Peele, is a social genius.

I can’t even explain how well he portrayed, in a horror film with a little bit of comedy, the exact fears and every day issues Black people face. One of the most important scenes to me was when the main character, Chris Washington, was meeting his girlfriend’s family and friends at an annual party. The subtle racially insensitive and completely ignorant questions and remarks sounded all too familiar to Black people, or people of color, in general. We are so used to hearing these out of line remarks that just like Chris in the movie, you either laugh to yourself to stop yourself from punching someone in the face and living up to the “anger Black man/woman/” stereotype or, you stare blankly in their face as you try to piece together how someone so ignorant is able to walk and breathe at the same time. If you think I’m joking, as your Black friends what inappropriate racial charged questions they have been asked in their lives, and then ask them why they actively prefer to avoid large groups of white people. Hint: the answers will go hand in hand.

This movie is so important especially today. I can’t wait to see it again so I can catch all the little messages I may have missed the first time around. I can’t wait to see it again and again because it’s just that damn important.

If you have not seen the movie, Get Out, fix your life and go see it ASAP.
