Today is the fifty millionth day of quarantine from coronavirus. Okay, maybe not quite so exaggerated, but some days it seems like it, right? Most of us have been cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner for our families for a few weeks now to avoid unnecessary outside contact. As you know from this blog, I love to cook, but man oh man do I miss someone else doing it a few days a week for us. However, one helpful tip for these strange times is too cook foods in bulk and/or in your crockpot/slow cooker. Crockpot smoked red beans has been a family favorite well before covid-19. It’s absolutely delicious, hassle free, and tastes like you’ve been living in the south all your life.
If you’ve been to Louisiana then you know of the staple dishes they take seriously down here is their red beans and rice. Any authentic Cajun restaurant is guaranteed to have red beans and rice on the menu. Being a foodie means I’m always trying my best to recreate the authentic flavors in some of my favorite dishes. After having red beans and rice at one of my favorite local mom and pop restaurants (Fat Tuesday’s Sandwich Shop in Bossier City, LA), I left determined to create a red beans and rice dish that is equally delicious. Not only did I figure it out after two tries, I realized I could make my life even easier by throwing these ingredients in my crockpot. Talk about a game changer! This was the process for my go to crockpot smoked red beans recipe.

My only not so great news is that you have to prepare your rice separately the old fashioned way. Unless you’re one of those fancy people with a rice cooker. I haven’t hit that level of fancy just yet. Ha! Now let’s go ahead and get into this yummy recipe.

Crockpot Smoked Red Beans
Authentic Cajun red beans and rice recipe. Perfect comfort food any time of the year!
Ingredients
- 1 lbs. Red Kidney Beans dried
- 2 lbs. Smoked Turkey Wings
- 1 Tbsp. Olive Oil
- 6-8 cups Water or Chicken Stock
- 1/2 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 Yellow Onion (medium) diced
- 1 Tbsp Slap Ya Mama
- 2 tsp Tony's Creole Seasoning
- 1 tsp Onion Powder
- 2 Bay Leaves
- Black Pepper to taste
Instructions
-
Heat the olive oil over medium high heat. Once hot cook the minced garlic and diced onion for a minute or two.
-
Add your Tony's Creole Seasoning and onion powder to the garlic and onions, stir well, and cook for another 2-3 minutes or until fragrant.
-
Pour the garlic and onion into the bottom of the crockpot. Turn your crockpot on high. (You can slow cook on high for 4.5 hours or on low for 8 hours)
-
Add your smoked turkey wings on top of the garlic onion mixture.
-
Pour your cups of water and/or chicken broth over the contents already in the pot. (I like to use a mix of half water half chicken broth. Either of them works!)
-
Gently empty the dried red kidney beans to the crockpot.
-
Add the Slap Ya Mama seasoning and bay leaves. Stir everything together to evenly distribute the seasoning in the food mixture.
-
Cover the crockpot and let it cook.
-
Half way through the cook time take the smoked turkey off of the bones, stir the ingredients together well, and cover again.
-
Adjust your spicy level by adding black pepper, hot sauce, and/or more Slap Ya Mama to the beans. Enjoy!

This is the absolute best and easy recipe! Thanks for sharing 🙂
I’m happy you enjoyed it! Thank you for trying it out 🤗
I’ve made this twice now (once on/around Juneteenth and again this weekend) and it is absolutely delicious! It reminds me of the red beans my late mother used to make and fills my heart with so much joy to be able to have this meal. Thank you for sharing!
